While cleaning out my late uncle’s bedroom, I expected to find old photographs, letters, and perhaps a few forgotten keepsakes.
Instead, I found something I never expected.
Tucked away in the back of a drawer was a small plastic bag filled with tiny glass tubes. Each tube contained several small silver-colored metal balls sealed inside.
At first glance, I had absolutely no idea what they were.
I poured a few into my hand and looked at them closely. They were small, delicate, and surprisingly unusual. The tiny metal balls rolled back and forth inside the glass whenever I tilted them.
The more I examined them, the more curious I became.
My uncle had always enjoyed fixing things around the house. If something broke, there was a good chance he could repair it. He loved taking things apart, understanding how they worked, and putting them back together again.
Because of that, I couldn’t help but wonder if these little glass tubes had once been part of a project he was working on.
After spending some time researching them, I finally found the answer.
These tiny devices are known as mercury tilt switches.
They were commonly used in older electronic equipment before modern sensors became widespread.
Their design is actually quite clever.
Inside each sealed glass tube is a small amount of conductive metal. When the switch is tilted in a certain direction, the metal moves and connects two electrical contacts, allowing electricity to flow. When the switch is tilted the opposite way, the connection is broken.
This simple mechanism allowed the switch to detect movement, position, or changes in angle without requiring complicated electronics.
Years ago, these switches could be found in thermostats, alarm systems, vending machines, pinball machines, household appliances, and various electronic projects.
For their time, they were an elegant solution to a common problem.
Of course, because these switches contain mercury, they should always be handled carefully. The glass tubes should never be intentionally opened or broken. If one becomes damaged, it should be disposed of according to local guidelines for hazardous materials.
Finding them made me think about my uncle in a way I hadn’t expected.
Maybe he saved them from old repairs.
Maybe he planned to use them in a future project.
Or maybe he simply kept interesting components because he appreciated how things worked.
Unfortunately, I’ll never know the exact reason.
What I do know is that these small objects brought back a flood of memories.
My uncle was the kind of person who always seemed to have a tool in his hand and a solution for every problem. He could spend hours fixing something most people would have thrown away. As children, we loved watching him work because he always made even the most complicated things seem simple.
Even now, years later, those memories still make us smile.
Finding these tiny switches reminded me that every drawer, every box, and every forgotten collection tells a small part of someone’s story.
The objects themselves may be simple, but the memories attached to them are priceless.
Although my uncle is no longer here with us, he remains in our hearts through the lessons he taught, the laughter we shared, and the countless moments we spent together.
We still talk about him often. We still remember the things he built, repaired, and cared about. And every now and then, we discover something that reminds us just how special he was.
I hope he has found peace, happiness, and comfort wherever his journey has taken him.
And somehow, finding these little glass switches made me feel close to him again, if only for a moment.
Have you ever discovered a small object that unexpectedly brought back memories of someone you loved?
